The Tanzeel Initiative is a network of reciters, scholars, teachers, and community leaders dedicated to reviving the timeless message of the Qur'an by making its teachings accessible, engaging, and relevant to all audiences. Through education, reflection, and community-driven programs, we aim to inspire hearts, deepen Qur'anic understanding, and empower individuals to live by divine guidance.

What does "Tanzeel" mean?

In the Qur'an, Tanzeel (تَنْزِيل) comes from the Arabic root ن-ز-ل (n-z-l), which means to descend or to send down.

Meaning in the Qur'anic context

Tanzeel specifically means “gradual revelation” or “sending down in stages.” It refers to the way the Qur'an was revealed portion by portion over time, rather than all at once.

You’ll often see verses like:

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

“A revelation sent down from the Lord of the worlds.” (Surah Al-Waqi’ah 56:80)

Here, Tanzeel emphasizes:

The deliberate, gradual process of revelation to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over about 23 years

To summarize, Tanzeel in the Qur'an means Allah’s guidance being revealed portion by portion, meaningfully, and according to circumstance and wisdom.

Al-Isra 17:106

وَقُرْآنًا فَرَقْنَاهُ لِتَقْرَأَهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ عَلَى مُكْثٍ وَنَزَّلْنَاهُ تَنزِيلًا

"And [it is] a Qur'an which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively."

Tafsir: This ayah emphasizes the gradual revelation of the Qur'an, allowing for reflection and understanding over time.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:192

وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"And indeed, it is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds."

Tafsir: This establishes the divine origin of the Qur'an, affirming its source from the Creator of all existence.

Yunus 10:37

وَمَا كَانَ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنُ أَن يُفْتَرَىٰ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلَٰكِن تَصْدِيقَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ مِن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"And it was not [possible] for this Qur'an to be produced by other than Allah, but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds."

Tafsir: This ayah confirms the authenticity and divine nature of the Qur'an, linking it to previous revelations.

Ya-Sin 36:1-6

يس * وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ * إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ * عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ * تَنزِيلَ الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ * لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّا أُنذِرَ آبَاؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَافِلُونَ

"Ya-Sin. By the wise Qur'an, indeed you are among the messengers, on a straight path. [It is] a revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful, that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware."

Tafsir: These opening ayahs affirm the Qur'an's wisdom, the Prophet's mission, and the divine source of revelation.

Al-Waqi'ah 56:75-80

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ * وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ * إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ * فِي كِتَابٍ مَّكْنُونٍ * لَّا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ * تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"Then I swear by the setting of the stars, And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great. Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an. In a Register well-protected; None touch it except the purified. [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds."

Tafsir: This passage emphasizes the exalted nature of the Qur'an and its divine origin, accessible to those who purify themselves.
